FAQ

PLAYGROUND FAQ

Is the rubber mulch ADA approved?
Yes, our rubber mulch meets ASTM F1951-99 ADA certification for wheel chair accessibility. The testing is based on a compacted 6" depth of rubber mulch.
What is IPEMA and what do they certify? IPEMA is the International Playground Equipment Manufactures Association. They work worldwide to insure that products are playground safe. Their certified products mean that you, the consumer, know that what you are buying has been tested and meets all of the established criteria. Not all rubber mulches are tested and certified by IPEMA.

Does the color fade?
In most environments, the color will not fade for years, however all paint exposed to the sun will fade over time. Our mulches will not lose their color for 12 years.

How long will the color last?
The color is warranted to last up to 12 years, contact us for warranty information.

Will the color stain clothes?
The rubber mulch is colored using a licensed process, which seals the rubber after the color is applied. Children while playing on the playground and all purpose rubber mulch will stay clean, even in the rain. It will not rub off on hands, shoes or clothes.

Is the playground rubber mulch paint safe for children & pets?
Absolutely! We could not offer the product for playground use if it was unsafe.

How does the coloring stay on the rubber?
Unlike wood chips, sand and uncolored black tire rubber, the colored rubber mulch process seals the rubber. The rubber won’t oxidize (chalk) because the colors are UV stable.

Can I special order a color?
Yes, however minimum quantities are required and the cost must be determined based on the color selected. Please contact us for more details.

What is the difference between natural or unpainted black and a painted black?
The difference is significant. The unpainted/natural black WILL get the children dirty. It is uncoated so it will be susceptible to oxidizing from the sun's rays. It would be similar to handling a old tire that has been exposed to the sun. The painted black uses a UV coated colorant that seals the rubber and prevents the oxidizing. Both provide the safety that is needed in playgrounds, but one is cleaner than the other.

For playgrounds, what is the cost benefit of rubber mulch to wood mulch?
In the long run, Rubber Mulch will save you money. After an initial investment that will be more costly than wood mulch, Rubber Mulch will not need to be replaced due to decomposition. You have material cost and labor one time; wood mulches have to be replenished often to maintain safety requirements. That replenishment requires the removal of the compacted, degraded wood mulch and installation of an entire new batch of material. In addition, only a 6 inch depth of rubber mulch is required for maximum safety, as compared to 12 inches of wood mulch.

How much do I need?
You can use our Coverage Calculator to calculate how much Rubber Mulch you will need for your project. If you are using our Rubber Mulch as a Playground Safety Surface, the depth necessary will vary based on the height of your equipment. We provide a 6" loose depth calculation and a 6" compacted depth calculation depending on your playground requirements. Landscaping uses can usually be accomplished using a 2" depth.

How much will a 2,000lb sack cover?
One 2,000 lb. bag will cover approximately 460 square feet 2" inches deep or approximately 230 square feet 4 inches deep.

How many cubic yards are there to a 2000lb sack?
Each yard of material weighs approximately 705 lbs, so each ton has approximately 2.84 cubic yards.

How do I know how deep the rubber mulch should be for my playground? And how big the area around the equipment is?
All playground equipment manufactures provide some guidelines for fall zones (length x width) and fall height safety (often in inches). Typically the fall zone is a minimum of 6' from each extended piece of equipment for residential playgrounds. Fall heights can be from 60" to 168". It is important to have a maintained depth of rubber mulch in inches with in the fall zone of your equipment. Playground rubber mulch depths can be as little as 3" and up to 6" depending on your equipments fall height rating. It is always best to be on the safe side.

Yes. We provide BIG discounts on truckload size (11 Pallets/20,000 lbs) orders or bigger. We will get you the lowest possible rubber mulch price. We will work with you on determining the best delivery service you require. Call us for more information.

What is fall height?
Fall height is used to determine the amount of material you need for a playground safety surface. It is based upon how high one can fall from a piece of equipment. If the fall height of a playground climber is 7' ( as provided in the specifications from the equipment manufacturer), it is recommended that you install and maintain a depth of 4" of rubber mulch. How is Playground Rubber Mulch superior to other loose surfacing products? The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and independent laboratories and licensed testing companies have conducted various tests designed to measure the shock-absorption of various surface materials as they relate to falling objects. Playground rubber mulch has been shown to consistently absorb more shock impact than any other standard surface material. This is particularly important because more than 200,000 playground injuries end up in the emergency room every year. That is more than 500 visits per day. The majority of those injuries are attributed to falls. 6" of playground rubber mulch can provide in excess of 12' of fall height safety, which no other surface can duplicate.

Is rubber mulch flammable?
Rubber Mulch is not flammable. Tire chips were tested in 1995 in accordance with the Federal Hazardous Substance Act to determine whether this material would be considered "flammable" (a material is considered flammable if it ignites and burns with a self-sustained flame at a rate greater than 0.1 inches per second along its major axis). Per these test results, scrap tire material is considered non-flammable. MSDS available upon request.

In the winter, our playground surface freezes, will Playground Rubber Mulch freeze?
No. That is one of the great benefits of Playground Rubber Mulch; it does not absorb water, so it will not freeze ( just like your car tires). So when a wood mulch playground freezes in the winter and the ground becomes unsafe for children to play on, Playground Rubber Mulch will be loose and provide the fall height safety your children deserve!

How is rubber mulch made?
Passenger, truck and OTR tires are collected, they are cut up and ground through a sequence of specialized tire recycling grinders which use magnets to remove all of the loose steel or tire chips with steel in them. The pieces are color coated in a big mixer and packaged for sale.

Do insects and bugs like rubber mulch?
NO. Rubber mulch products will not attract termites or insects like other mulches; other mulches often contain insects in them when you purchase it. In fact, Rubber Mulch deters mosquito nesting because rubber mulch remains dry on top. Rubber Mulch does not provide a food or nesting source for insects. Pest control companies prefer rubber mulch over all wood mulches for landscaping uses around your home as it reduces the chance of termite infestation

How do I contain the playground rubber mulch?
Use of playground borders is recommended. We offer rubber playground borders that are manufactured to order and shipped separately. What ever border system you choose, you will need to have the height of the border 1" higher than the mulch. This will assist in containment and avoid overspilling
How large of an area do I need to install playground rubber mulch? The entire mulched area should be calculated to include a "use" or "fall zone". The manufacturers specifications for your playground equipement will provide those dimensions. If you do not have that information, the area should be calculated at a minimum of 6' from each extended piece of equipment (example would be 6' from the full extension forward and backwards of a swing). For more information you can review the CPSC guidelines for residential and public playgrounds here.

If a piece of rubber is swallowed, it should not cause any acute or chronic problems. Short-term issues, such as an upset stomach will be a function of the amount of rubber swallowed. As to the fate of the rubber chips swallowed, they are eventually evacuated from the body, just like any other non-digestible material.

What does the government say about rubber mulch?
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and numerous state and private agencies determined that shredded tire rubber chips have consistently outperformed all other surface materials in impact absorption and surface attenuation. Playground rubber mulch has been extensively tested and the results show a safety factor for a fall of 12' feet with a 6"inch application and a safety factor for a fall of 8' feet with a 4" inch application.

No. Unlike wood mulch or chips which can bleed when wet, Rubber Mulch will not.

What is the cost comparison to landscaping wood mulches?
There will be a greater up front cost associated with Rubber Mulch, but the long term savings will be significant. The product is 3-4 times the cost of wood mulch, but it lasts for 12 years or longer. When you consider that pine straw and wood mulch will breakdown after 12 weeks and Rubber Mulch hasn't changed at all, you can appreciate the value this will add to your home.

What are the coverage comparisons to wood mulch?
The rubber mulch requires less depth since it will not decompose or compact like wood mulches. You will need no more than 2" of rubber mulch (our recommended depth) for landscaping purposes while you will often need 3" to 4" of wood mulches. The recommended installation depth for landscaping applications is 2". Rubber Mulch Products Inc, has been providing mulch for years to our customers and the only people that have had issues are those that bought from some other companies who said they needed 1" or 1.5". These other companies do this to get you to buy the first time, knowing you will need more and have to buy additional material. They make it seem as if you only need a little; we don't play that game. We want you to buy what you need the first time.

How do install rubber mulch for landscaping?
We recommend removal of all existing mulch material to begin. This reduces the insect nesting and weed issues that may exist with the current mulch. You can choose to use or not use a porous long warranted (15 year warranty or more) weed barrier/ground cloth/landscape fabric. (If you do, it must be porous to allow water to pass through into the ground. If you do not use a landscape fabric, you may need to spray some weed killer in the future.) We have had many clients use both methods and have long term results superior to any wood products. After the ground has been prepared, install the rubber mulch at a depth of 2".
